The increasing role of technology in remote work
During the current era of remote work, various applications of information technology have become ever more central in work life. Various digital communication channels offer communication experiences that vary in terms of richness and immersion, hence affording different ways to communicate remotely and create a sense of togetherness in organizations. However, the systems also enforce certain structures and conditions to how organizations may realize and manage their collaborative actions. As researchers and developers, we should continuously reflect and re-imagine what kind of technological tools would be ideal for individuals and organizations.
While new technologies can bring many benefits, we also need to beware the risk of unintended and unexpected negative consequences and the inherent limitations of technology-mediated communication. Especially in remote work, people continuously need to coordinate activities like sharing knowledge, building trust, and creating shared visions –– while lacking the richness of embodied resources of interaction familiar from face-to-face interactions. This means that new forms and arrangements of technology-mediated social interactions emerge as individuals and organizations deliberately and unconsciously refine collaboration practices and develop new ways of using technology for collaborative tasks.
One of the FutuRemote community’s interests is to understand information and communication technologies as continuously evolving socio-technical systems. We aim to not only produce academic insights into this but also identify ways for Finnish companies to develop more sustainable solutions regarding technology and use workspace, and practices of leadership and communication.”
